16 Plus Biology is sat by students wishing to enter the sixth form of an independent school. Most often students will sit exams in their desired A Level subjects, so usually between three and five subjects. The 16+ exams generally require a good understanding of the subjects’ GCSE syllabi but as the schools are testing for potential, candidates will be pushed and be given questions where their knowledge is stretched.
The GCE A Level in Biology gives students an understanding of many contemporary issues requiring a grasp of fundamental biological ideas; the topics covered include molecular and cellular biology, ecological principles, animal and plant physiology as well as the biochemical topics of photosynthesis and respiration. Furthermore, Biology opens the door to careers in academic research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and environmental monitoring. It is also commonly a prerequisite for potential medicine, veterinary and nursing qualifications.
