As an agency we have always endeavoured to foster the link between tutors and us. This allows us to get to know tutors better, so our job of recommending them to clients becomes easier. As tutors ourselves, we know how important it is to be supported. Tutoring can be a lonely profession without the community of a school or a staff room.
The process starts at interview – at least 45 minutes face-to-face and one-on-one with someone gives us a good impression of a tutor’s character. We can gauge the subjects they are passionate about and discuss the nitty gritty of their schedules. Our 90-minute induction session gives us a further opportunity to interact with tutors. We look at teaching exercises, discuss learning styles and tricky situations. Through our induction sessions we gain a deeper insight into a tutor’s overall approach.
Throughout the academic year we run free ‘Improve Your Teaching’ workshops at our office. Tutors can learn from other tutors about subjects such as the 11+ exams, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and memory techniques.
Twice a year we invite the 200 or so tutors on our books to join us for a drink, to celebrate Christmas and the end of the school year. This is to thank them for their dedication and hard work. And recently, an online tutoring community group has been created, by tutors for tutors. Tutors can arrange social events, share resources and support each other.
